Four Peterson volunteers attended the Project CHEF program at the Queen Alexandra Elementary on December 8th and 9th, 2016. Project CHEF (Cooking Healthy Edible Food) is an experiential, curriculum-based school program for children in grades four and five where students have the opportunity to learn about healthy foods. Students have the opportunity to learn where their food comes from, what it tastes like, and how to prepare healthy meals and snacks. The program also teaches students to look at nutritional facts and gain a better understanding of what they consume on a day to day basis.
Students used local, seasonal ingredients for the one week course where they start off watching and listening to a demonstration presented by the chefs followed by preparing their own meals in groups. Throughout the program, children had the opportunity to experience the excitement and satisfaction of making their own meals while developing the skills and knowledge to making nutritional food options at home.
