We are excited to introduce a new position, Senior Tax Specialist, to join our in-house tax team. The role plays an integral part of the team and will work closely with the Director, Taxation and accounting team to ensure all of Peterson’s tax compliance and reporting obligations are met in an efficient and timely manner. The role is primarily responsible for the preparation or review of tax compliance and tax working papers for a large portfolio of personal, corporate, partnership, trust and other structures. The Senior Tax Specialist manages the tax administration, assists with tax planning and other adhoc projects.

The ideal candidate is a highly technical and analytical individual with 3 – 5 years’ of experience in a tax related role. The individual will have a wide breadth of experience working with different organizational structures and will suit someone who is looking to further expand their tax experience and looking to work collaboratively with a range of different departments including corporate accounting, property accounting, investments, securities and legal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing or reviewing personal (T1), corporate (T2), partnership (T5013), trust (T3) and other information returns and reporting (e.g. T5, NR4, T1134, FATCA/CRS, BC Speculation and Vacancy Tax), elections, and other Canadian and US tax forms and filings;
  • Preparing, updating or reviewing tax working papers and calculations (e.g. ACB, at-risk amount, CDA, capital gain, safe income, FAPI) for corporate, real estate and investment structures;
  • Preparing and updating estimated taxable income, tax instalments and tax payment calculations for cash flow management and other purposes;
  • Managing tax audits and requests from various tax authorities, working together with internal teams and external advisors;
  • Streamlining the tax compliance process and procedures to improve efficiency and developing best practices;
  • Assisting with tax planning for the corporate group and family office and documenting research and analysis on various tax issues, including federal and provincial income and other taxes (e.g., GST/HST, PST, property transfer tax, COVID incentives);
  • Assisting with tax due diligence and planning on transactions and reviewing related legal documents;
  • Assisting with dissolutions and windups of inactive entities as necessary;
  • Performing or assisting with FATCA/CRS due diligence and other procedures and processes;
  • Working together with the trustees to facilitate distributions to trust beneficiaries and payment of trust expenses;
  • Ensuring CRA records are up to date and managing business records and tax accounts primarily through CRA’s online portal;
  • Preparing and updating organizational charts for corporate and other structures; and
  • Keeping up-to-date on latest tax developments and legislation and determining impact to the organization.

What You Bring

  • Completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant designation;
  • Completion of Year 2 of the In-Depth Tax Program;
  • 3 – 5 years’ of tax experience specifically with corporate, partnership and other tax and information return preparation;
  • Experience with personal and trust tax return preparation and review is preferred;
  • Experience with US or cross border tax and indirect and other taxes is an asset;
  • Proficiency with tax software (such as Taxprep or Profile) and Microsoft Excel;
  • Strong attention to detail, organized, meticulous, and methodical in performing duties;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and analytical skills;
  • Efficient and effective time and project management, demonstrating accountability and ability to meet tight timelines under high-pressure while producing quality and accurate work;
  • Collaborative ability to work within different teams as well as independently and proactively;
  • High-level of professionalism and discretion in handling confidential information; and
  • Ability to develop strong, positive, and professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
